A extensive rescue and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for two lost boats transporting relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Maritime Search Missions Deployed

The Mexican government has deployed naval assets and military search aircraft to find the missing boats, which were had on board no fewer than nine sailors, as stated by a military release.

The boats had been scheduled to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Aid to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through repeated nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable safety equipment and signalling equipment," a representative for the convoy commented.

The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Recent Aid Mission

Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That boat, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and provisions.

Broader Political Context

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba since January, when a fuel embargo on the island nation began.

International organizations have since warned of ""severe" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand surgeries called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Political tensions have intensified lately, with remarks from various representatives emphasizing the complex nature of relations.

Reacting to certain proposals, a high-ranking government figure declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of discussions were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The naval forces affirmed it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the sailboats and ensure the security of the people on board.

To date, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
