Israelis have come together around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the plan.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an late session of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.

The representative explained the day's discussions finished without tangible results, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.

He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Key Issues in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
  • Post-war management of the area

Citizen Reaction

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until all the hostages return no one will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.

Outside the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Demonstrator one woman remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."

Surveys now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to conclude in return for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Conditions

At the site of the music event, mourners gathered to honor the dead.

From that location, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, sector and locality districts and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the night falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, described.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who places his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."

Health Crisis

The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had received the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of that area indicated additional victims had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the southern area, medics said.
