Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD issued security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
