British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts down to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
