Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.

Her exit from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be building momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
