Prison Shock: The Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison
He fought the legal system and justice prevailed.
Sixty days following getting a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks headed to prison.
Imminent Imprisonment
The adjudicated coup-monger – who had been subject to home confinement in his mansion while a number of judicial steps and appeals unfold – is largely predicted to be jailed in the next few days, amid increasing rumors that he will be transferred to a well-known maximum security prison.
Previous Remarks on Inmates
Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the right-wing ex- soldier showed scant compassion for the country's jailed individuals.
“For what reason must we give those lowlifes a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “Unless you desire to wind up there, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”
Incarceration Location Debate
However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified backers, a group of four this week toured the prison in an seeming bid to prevent the supreme court from banishing him there.
Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, stated he anticipated the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the next 10 days and was concerned his location could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal issues – the consequence of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 political campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He will not be able to manage if they move him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he commented, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the condition of inmate food.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells holding forty detainees: “That is virtually one square metre per detainee.
“We spoke to the convicts and they complain, naturally, of the awful cuisine,” remarked the senator.
Allies React
The senator isn't the sole person speaking out before the ex-leader's expected detention.
Penning in a major daily, a different supporter, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the biggest wrong in its history”.
“It is an unfairness that gnaws the spirits of countless people in Brazil,” he stated.
Varied Public Opinion
This could be accurate due to the substantial backing Bolsonaro holds on the conservative side. But his anticipated jailing has also warmed the spirits of millions individuals who believe he should be imprisoned for planning to block the elected leader from becoming president – and additionally conspiring to have him killed.
Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the current president's political party, commented: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. No one desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to obtain respectful handling – but respectful handling while incarcerated. He must not persist being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years celebrating the severe conditions of prisoners, had unexpectedly woken up to their entitlements. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly argued that civil liberties were not for lawbreakers – chosen to inspect a jail to find out what situations are truly like,” he said.
“He is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, degrading treatment”.
Likely Prison Facilities
In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which now holds about fourteen thousand inmates, his probable destination looks to be a nearby prison for police officers and other “particular” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
The accommodations are far more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the stunning presidential palace, approximately 20 kilometers away.
As per sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – approximately the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 sq metre bathroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre terrace. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a TV and also a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were donated by his family,” sources suggested.
Partisan Responses
