Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter marks the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Favorites
It has been established that a trio of different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, despite dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he got the news from the original writer.
"I recall the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he explains. "A part that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.
"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the film will be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Alternatively, maybe they are somehow still living in a bizarre communal situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
