Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections from Iran and Egypt

Plans for Pride-focused celebrations throughout the city amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament will continue as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian football federations voiced objections about a planned “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations and City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. These events will take place around the tournament group match between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the stadium.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to prepare our city to host the matches and manage the fan activities outside of the match venue,” said a committee representative.

Cultural Context Behind the Formal Complaints

Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, while in Egypt, morality laws are often used to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation stated it did not want to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation also raised “its opposition against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance Regarding Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums during games. Although it prohibits political signage with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This policy was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.

  • This special fixture was an idea created to showcase Seattle’s longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
  • An artistic competition has been commissioned to produce artwork to commemorate the occasion.
  • Organizers have pledged to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest throughout the tournament.

The region is home to one of the nation’s most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “We’re committed is to ensuring everyone encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our region,” the statement added.
