The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Does the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.

“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why not reference the classics?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
