The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. This serves as a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Year and European Arrival

That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
