The Denver Nuggets star won the NBA's Most Valuable Player title in three of the past four years.

Thrice-crowned NBA Most Valuable Player Jokic sustained a "gut-wrenching" injury to his knee when the Denver Nuggets fell 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

Jokic was hurt towards the end of the second quarter following an inadvertent coming together with teammate Spencer Jones.

His teammate landed on the footwear of Jokic, who immediately went down to the floor clutching his leg.

The star, that leads the league this season in boards and assists, recorded a score of 21 points and eight assists in the matchup prior to sustaining the setback.

Jokic is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday to determine the seriousness of the problem.

"Right away, Jokic understood he was hurt," stated Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Whoever who suffers an injury, that's difficult, especially a player as important as he is. We will know more on Tuesday."

"We will continue together. Obviously, at this moment, I am focused primarily about him personally and the frustration of going through an event like that."
